Exotic breeds were introduced to Uganda to boost meat production and commercial viability due to their superior size and growth rates.

The most common exotic breeds in Uganda include:

  • New Zealand White: The most popular commercial breed in the country, easily identified by its pure white fur and red eyes. It is highly valued for its excellent meat-to-bone ratio and fast growth.

  • California White: Similar to the New Zealand White but distinguished by dark brown or black patches on its ears, nose, feet, and tail. It is also an excellent meat producer.

  • Chinchilla: A greyish, fur-heavy breed that is relatively large and adapted well to the Ugandan climate, used for both meat and pelt.

  • Flemish Giant: One of the largest breeds introduced, capable of weighing over 5 kg to 7 kg. While they provide substantial meat, they require more space and have a higher feed consumption rate.
